Description

Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church (born 1883) who served as Vatican Secretary of State from 1961 to 1969, and Dean of the College of Cardinals from 1972 until his death the following year. TLS in Italian, signed “A. G. Cicognani,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, Apostolic Delegation letterhead, January 16, 1955. Letter to Monsignor Guido Anichini, in part (translated): "I received yours on December 23rd, with Christmas and New Year's greetings: I warmly thank you for your kind thoughts and I offer you the best wishes for a happy New Year. I left in Monsignor Howard Carroll's hand, the National Catholic Welfare Conference, the volume that you sent me on 'Giuseppe Toniolo.' Archbishop Carroll promised that he would contribute to the knowledge of the book in the United States, with appropriate reports in magazines or prints; but he didn't say financial aid. I would be grateful if you would like to have a second copy of the volume sent here: the one left to Archbishop Carroll will serve for the Social Department of the N.C.W.C. Please tell me the price, because I want it paid." Cicognani adds a vertical postscript in the left margin. In fine condition. Cicognani served as the Apostolic Delegate to the United States from March 17, 1933 until November 14, 1959.
