ALS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 5, January 10, 1876. Letter to Mrs. Sargent, in part: "I am extremely sorry that it was not in my power to accept your kind invitation for Saturday evening. I am still tortured by Neuralgia, and consequently quite unfit for any social gatherings. Every attempt I make only throws me back. So, for the present, I have to forego many pleasant meetings of friends." In fine condition, with old mounting traces along the hinge.
