Confederate major general (1836-1909) who later served as major general of US volunteers in the Spanish-American War. LS signed “M. C. Butler,” one page, 5 x 8, Senate Chamber letterhead, April 6, 1885. In part: "Have Mr. Moore to prepare an application for the consulate he wishes, let it be endorsed by those who know his character and capacity, then forward to me and I will recommend his appointment and place the paper on file in the proper department." In fine condition.
