Career US Army officer (1818-1879) who served as an artillery commander during the Mexican-American War and Civil War. Civil War-dated ALS signed “William F. Barry, Brig: Genl: Insp'r of Artillery,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, Headquarters Inspector of Artillery letterhead, April 24, 1863. Letter of recommendation, in part: "Sergeant Hugh T. Peters of Company M, 9th Reg't N.Y. Artillery…is represented to me by his immediate commander as a non-commissioned of promise, and one whose proficiency in drill and other artillery information is unusually creditable. I recommend him for promotion to commissioned officer." In fine condition.
