Union general (1830-1889) awarded the Medal of Honor for his participation in the First Battle of Bull Run; he later served as a a special provost marshal during the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators, and led the convicted Mary Surratt, Lewis Paine, David Herold, and George Atzerodt to the gallows, where he read them their last rites before they were hanged. Partly-printed DS, signed “J. F. Hartranft,” one page, 7.75 x 10, August 23, 1866. Auditor General's Office document certifying a war widow's annuity to be paid to "Catherine Batdorf, widow of Henry Batdorf of Berks Co., a soldier of the war of 1812." In fine condition.
