Scientist, army officer, and pioneer in forensic ballistics (1891-1955) who examined the bullet casings in the 1927 Sacco and Vanzetti case (concluding they came from Sacco's gun) and proved that the guns used in the 1929 St. Valentine's Day Massacre were not police issue weapons, and thus the murders were likely a mob hit. TLS signed “Cal,” one page, 8 x 10.5, War Department, Office of the Chief of Ordnance letterhead, August 25, 1942. Letter to Major W. R. Baldwin, in part: "I enclose the application blanks which I promised to send you. Apparently both the white and yellow should be completed. If you will mail these to me at your convenience I shall be glad to see what I can do with them." In very good to fine condition, with some light edge creasing, and a paperclip impression to the top edge.
