Description

Tiny strand of Ludwig van Beethoven's hair, presented on a limited edition 11 x 8.5 color page featuring two portraits of the composer, numbered 6/300, framed to an overall size of 12 x 9.5. Beethoven was 56 when he died in Vienna in 1827; a lock was clipped as a keepsake by 15-year old music student Ferdinand Hiller, who accompanied his music teacher, Johann Hummel, a friend of the composer, to Beethoven's house the day after he died. It was a common practice to cut the hair of a dead person as a keepsake. The hair was given as payment to a Danish doctor who helped Jews escape to Sweden during World War II. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from John Reznikoff/University Archives. From the collection of Stephen Adamson.
