Description

Flown fabric presentation created by the Smithsonian Institution, featuring an affixed dark brown 2 x 2 swatch of wing fabric removed from the Curtiss NC-4 Flying Boat that made the first transatlantic flight from Rockaway Beach, New York, to Lisbon, Portugal, in 1919. Framed to an overall size of 18.5 x 22.5. In fine condition. In the 1970s-80s, the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum created a series of relic presentations using fabric removed during the restoration of historically important aircraft. A desirable piece from a historic aircraft. It seems remarkable that the Smithsonian would sell off such significant artifacts, and after a few years, not surprisingly, the museum decided that this was not a good idea after all and their policy now forbids this practice.
