American astronomer, physicist, and aviator (1834-1906), who conducted some of the first manned flights with his Army-funded Aerodrome aircraft. TLS signed “S. P. Langley,” one page, 4 x 7, Smithsonian Institution letterhead, August 6, 1901. Letter to F. H. Wheelan, in full: "I have just received at Washington, your invitation to a dinner at the University Club on August first. I can only thank you for your very kind intention, and express my regret at having missed so agreeable an occasion." Matted and framed with a portrait and biographical clipping to an overall size of 15.5 x 13.5. In fine condition, with the typed portion of the letter faded but fully readable.
