Scarce original vintage signed and inscribed colored pencil sketch of a budding red flower on an off-white 3.5 x 6.25 card, signed at the bottom in green pencil, "G. W. Carver," and inscribed above in ink, "Wishing Mr. Shehehee a Merry Christmas." As a young boy, Carver would draw and spend considerable amounts of time painting flowers, plants, and landscapes. He later took art classes at Simpson College in Iowa where he learned to draw and paint very detailed plants and flowers. In 1893, his paintings received honorable mention at the Chicago World's Fair. A previous owner indicated that this example comes directly from the collection at the Slave Relic Historical Museum, Walterboro, South Carolina. In very good to fine condition, with a couple of creases, scattered light foxing, and a stain to the upper right corner.
