Description

Scarce official White House Christmas etching from 1931, 6 x 10, signed in the lower border in fountain pen by President Herbert Hoover and First Lady Lou Henry Hoover, and dated Christmas Day 1931. The etching, picturing the Washington Monument, is an engraving made by J. C. Claghorn, who signs his name in pencil and also writes “From the South Portico of the White House.” Matted to an overall size of 10.5 x 15. In fine condition.

In 1931 the Hoovers gave out prints to family, staff members, and aides. Some were photo etchings done by Joseph C. Claghorn of the Washington Monument, the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, and Mount Vernon. They also gave out four different matted, framed, and signed photographs of the Washington Monument to staff members. This is a rarity, being an original etching (not a photo of the etching) that is signed by the Hoovers and Claghorn.
