Extremely rare original Gerde's Folk City handbill for a series of Bob Dylan performances between September 26 and October 8, 1961, 8.5 x 11, with the handbill's bold header text reading: “Gerdes Folk City, New York’s Center of Folk Music.” The lower portion of the handbill addresses the appearance of the Greenbriar Boys, “picking & singing thru bluegrass,” before listing their supporting act: “With the sensational Bob Dylan.” Above the handbill promotes an “Historic Reunion” between Lonnie Johnson, “Dean of Blues Guitarists,” Victoria Spivey, “Queen of the Blues,” and David Gude, scheduled to run September 12-24. In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and intersecting folds. Consignor notes that this particular handbill was proudly mailed by Dylan to his friend, blues musician and music critic Tony ‘Little Sun’ Glover, not long after the former reached New York City. A terrific early handbill from a significant and central Greenwich Village meeting ground, a folk music venue where Dylan cut his teeth and played his earliest NYC shows.
From the Tony Glover Collection.
UPDATE: Additional research has proven this item to be a handbill and not a poster as originally stated.
