Written from Purbeck Park in Portsmouth, England, a letter to J. Blackburn, concerning his efforts to find a suitable home in retirement, in part: “I am at this moment arrived at this place…The house at Candover is a good shell of a House but will take at least a year and half to put it in repair…and you know my age will not admit of my waiting for building. Enclosed is a letter of a friend of mine who was about it by which you will see what its real worth. Tis certainly a very healthy spot, but badly placed. The trouble I give you really hurts me but your friendship has been such that I know not how I can repay you and you will find that by your being so good, makes me take the liberty of giving you more trouble. The enclose bill I received from New York. May I beg the favor or your receiving the money for me when due and keeping it in your hand till I have the honor of seeing you. Pray do not neglect to pay my respectable compliments to Mrs. Blackburn and your amiable gents. Adieu my dear friend." In fine condition, with writing showing through from opposing sides. Accompanied by an 1811 engraving of the Admiral by Joyce Gold of London.
