Description

Requesting "the wildflower herbarium" from a museum curator

Swiss botanist (1778-1841) who spent much of his life in an attempt to elaborate and complete his natural system of botanical classifications. He was the first to put forward the idea of 'Nature's war,' writing of plants being 'at war one with another' competing for survival—a concept later studied by Charles Darwin. ALS in French, signed “De Candolle,” one page, 7 x 4.5, no date. Letter to the curator of a museum, in part (translated): "For next year, Mr. Curator will kindly have his entry on the roles of doors and windows crossed out; I cannot have the trouble…twice while the work is paid nothing. He will also kindly send me…the wildflower herbarium." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, and faint toning along the central vertical fold.
