ALS signed “V. Jefferson Davis,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6, black-bordered stationery, August 9, 1891. Written from St. Elmo College, a letter to Miss Lanigan, in part: "Winnie and I were very sorry to hear you had been ill & wish you would come down to 'these parts' & get a whiff of cool sea air. It is delightful here—the papers say a little rowdy but I have failed to find this characteristic on the Pier, so called because there is none. Winnie telegraphed you in answer to yours inquiring what honorarium she would expect that for shorter articles…She is not well but I hope is a little stronger than when you saw her. I am slowly steaming up the steep grade old age traverses towards recovery." In very good to fine condition, with a short edge tear, and some minor surface loss to the black borders.
