Description

Notorious criminal (1890-1963) who, while imprisoned, became a self-educated authority on birds and earned the nickname 'The Birdman of Alcatraz.' ALS in pencil, signed “Bob, Robert Stroud - 594,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.25, August 14, 1945. Letter written from Alcatraz, in part: "I had a nice letter from ark the other day and it seems that everything is going to be O.K. with the book…He says that he now has things well organized and that the book campaign is rolling. Of course it will be six weeks before we can have any indication of the response, but I am sure that it will be good. The sales have held up well under the limited advertizing I have been using up until this time. We sold $108.00 worth last month, and July is always a very poor month. August is always poor, too, but things should begin to pick up in September…We are having our winter now. Out in the yard this morning it was warm but foggy…Well, I guess the war is at last over. The whistles are blowing now, and the air is full of planes. We had a false alarm night before last, but this sounds like the real thing." Also signed at the head, "Robert Stroud, P.M.B. 594, Alcatraz, California." In fine condition.
