Colonial military officer during the French and Indian War, and a general in the Continental Army during the Revolution (1738-1824) who, as an organizer of the Ohio Company, was instrumental in the initial settling of the Northwest Territory. ADS, one page, 7.75 x 5.75, July 9, 1801. Pay order submitted to "George Simpson, Cashier of the Bank of the United States," in part: "Ten days after Sight, pay to Jonathan Trumbull or order four hundred Dollars, being for part of my Salary for the Second quarter of the present year, as Surveyor General of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by Putnam, and endorsed on the reverse by Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., who was then serving as governor of Connecticut. In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
