Despite being one of the best singles hitters of his era, Mitchell is best remembered for a singular moment in 1956—he struck out to end Don Larsen's perfect game in Game 5 of the World Series. Pinch-hitting for Brooklyn pitcher Sal Maglie, Mitchell took a called third strike to end the only perfect game in Series history; as one of the game's toughest hitters to strike out (he did so just 119 times in 4358 career regular-season plate appearances), Mitchell always maintained that the pitch should have been called a ball. In this card, Mitchell is shown in his Cleveland Indians cap, where he played all but the last three months of his career after his contract was purchased by Brooklyn. A superb and very scarce example in the MINT 9 grade.
