Description

French general (1856-1951) who was honored as a national hero for his defense of Verdun during World War I, but who was convicted after World War II of dealings with the enemy while head of the collaborationist Vichy regime. TLS signed “Ph. Petain,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, French Minister of War letterhead, July 3, 1934. Letter to J. L. Faure, in part (translated): "You pointed out to me the candidacy for the Cravat of the Legion of Honor of Professor Raymond Gregoire, by telling me that he was your friend and had very beautiful titles….However, Professor Gregoire has, compared to his competitors, insufficient service seniority, insufficient seniority in the Legion of Honor and insufficient war titles." He adds a handwritten postscript at the conclusion, signing again, "Ph. P." In fine condition. Petain only served as minister of war from February 9, 1934 to November 8, 1934, making letters from this position rather scarce.
