Description

Major general in the Continental Army (1733-1810) during the American Revolutionary War, known as the officer who formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown. Partly-printed DS, signed “B. Lincoln,” one page, 13 x 8.25, October 14, 1801. As collector of the Port of Boston, Lincoln certifies a ship's manifest. In part: "Ebenezer Scudder, Jr., Master of the Sloop Columbia, having sworn, as the Law directs, to the within Manifest, consisting of Five Articles of Entry, and delivered Duplicates thereof; Permission is hereby granted to the said Sloop to proceed to the Port of New York." Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln as collector, and countersigned by a naval officer. The reverse of the document has a manuscript listing of the contents of the ship, including indigo and brandy. In very good condition, with scattered light staining, and splitting along the vertical folds.
