Description

Three items signed by figures associated with Texas independence, including Thomas J. Rusk, James W. Throckmorton, and George W. Smyth.

Thomas Jefferson Rusk
Soldier and statesman (1803-1857) who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and served as chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court. ALS signed "Tho. J. Rusk," one page, 7.75 x 6.75, January 14, 1851, to Gen. R. Jones, in full: "I enclose you the paper you were kind enough to loan me and am much obliged to you for the privilege afforded me of perusing it." In fine condition.

James W. Throckmorton
American politician (1825-1894) who was one of eight delegates to vote against secession from the United States at the Texas secession convention in 1861; he later served as governor of Texas from 1866 to 1867 during the early days of Reconstruction. Ink signature, "J. W. Throckmorton, McKinney, Texas," on a white 7 x 2 slip. In fine condition.

George W. Smith
Politician and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence (1803-1866). Large ink signature, "Geo. W. Smyth, Jasper, Texas," on an off-white 3.75 x 2.75 slip. In fine condition. From the collection of Dr. Lawrence E. Miller.
