Description

Stagg details his battle with sciatica pain

Renowned athletic coach (1862-1965) whose versatile skills earned him places in both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Basketball Hall of Fame. TLS signed “Lon Stagg,” two pages, 7.75 x 10, The University of Chicago letterhead, September 4, 1916. Letter to Henry M. Adkinson, in part: "I am afraid that I cannot help your Mr. Parshall much. It took me about five years to get rid of my sciatica which started in 1903 and I spent between $6,000 and $7,000 in my efforts. I went to Colorado, to Mount Clemens, Mich., to Hot Springs, Ark., to Florida twice, and to Mudlavia twice. Two years ago, I had a return two days before the opening of football practice and I practically did not do any walking for about six weeks. I had such an acute attack that I stayed in bed for eight days. After that I laid on the bed all of the time excepting during the period that I was coaching the football team. I rode over to the field in the side car of a motorcycle with a foot warmer in the car…My advice to Mr. Parshall would be to use woolen underwear throughout, even including his socks. I presume that he is subjected at times to wet feet and possibly wet clothing and it seems to me that he must absolutely avoid this in the future. I have had so much trouble, that I am very careful, even to the point that I always change my underclothing even after getting sweaty. Possibly I might not have to do it if I used woolen undershirt. Of course this is not true in mid summer, but only when I have been playing tennis, or rowing, or have had a sweat out." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, light creasing, and pin holes to the upper left corner. Accompanied by Adkinson's response letter.
