Description

Comparing "the struggle waged two centuries ago by the United States for independence and nationhood, and that of Israel in our own generation"

TLS signed “M. Dayan,” one page, 7.75 x 10.75, Israeli Minister for Foreign Affairs letterhead, August 7, 1977. Letter to the students of Mrs. Marylon Gillen in Shirley, New York, in part: "Your teacher, Mrs. Gillen, thought it would be of interest to you if I were to write you a few personal words. She based her letter to me on the similarities which, rightly I think, she saw in the struggle waged two centuries ago by the United States for independence and nationhood, and that of Israel in our own generation. Underlying both have been a mutual dedication to the great ideals of freedom and democracy and human equality. Both peoples, too, have shared in and have been exhilarated by the pioneering challenge of the untamed wilderness. But, there are also great differences: your country, by contrast with my own, is a land of vast size and potentialities; and while we are both the products of layer upon layer of immigrant settlers, Israel is an old-young State with deep roots in history going back more than two thousand years to biblical times, to the immortal words of the prophets, and founded on the passionate determination, over many centuries, of a scattered people for national restoration in its own ancient homeland. Again you have not known, as we have, ever since the inception of our State, the necessity, every year and every month and every day, to be ready to defend ourselves against the possibility of attack by aggressive neighbours. The thought that your class, like many others throughout the United States, shares our hopes and prayers for peace and that this peace should soon come about, is a source of great encouragement to me and my people." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and a trimmed left edge. From the Collection of Dr. Lawrence E. Miller.
