Actor (1853-1937) best remembered today for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage and in a 1916 silent film. His portrayal of Holmes helped create the modern image of the detective. Vintage 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet portrait of William Gillette smoking a Sherlock Holmes-type pipe in a half-length pose, signed in the lower border in black ink with added date of "Nov. 1904." Published by Hall's Studio of New York. In very good to fine condition, with silvering to the perimeter of the image.
