British politician (1759-1806) who served as Prime Minister from 1783 to 1801 and 1804 to 1806. ALS signed “W. Pitt,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.5, November 10, 1796. Letter to the Duke of Hamilton, in part: "I have just received Your Grace's letter of this day, and have to apologize for not having previously answered that which came to me a few days ago at Wimbledon. I am sensible how long a Time has elapsed since Your Grace first mentioned to me your wishes respecting Church Preferment, and should feel great pleasure if I had been or were not able to comply with them; but I have the mortification to be obliged to add that the very numerous and urgent Claims of that Nature shall leave me far from at Liberty." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and faint toning, and old tape to the back of the blank integral leaf. From the collection of Dr. Lawrence E. Miller.
