Description

United States Army general (1898-1975) who commanded the force defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, most famous for his brief reply to a German surrender ultimatum—'Nuts!' Superb official vintage matte-finish 7.5 x 10 portrait of McAuliffe in uniform against an American flag, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Mr. Ashley T. Cole, with best wishes, A. C. McAuliffe, Maj. Gen., U.S. Army.” Reverse bears a Signal Corps credit stamp. In fine condition, with light edge rippling. From the collection of Dr. Lawrence E. Miller.
