Vintage sepia matte-finish 7.25 x 10.5 photo of Chief Justice Hughes in his judicial robe by Harris & Ewing, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Mr. Paul Dearing, With cordial regards, Charles E. Hughes, October 3, 1942.” In fine condition, with a small stain and paperclip impression to the upper left corner, and minor surface loss to the upper right corner tip. An intriguing collector's note penciled on the reverse reads: "Aug 6/45—Paul Dearing was a fine young man—a collector—I deposited a check of his today, only to learn that he had been killed in that horrible plane accident—the one that hit the Empire State Bldg—He leaves a wife and five children—Shocking! He was a personal friend, too." On July 28, 1945, a fog-blind B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building in New York City, killing fourteen; Dearing's was the first body identified. From the Collection of Dr. Lawrence E. Miller.
