He concurred on the 1857 Dred Scott decision, although for reasons different from Chief Justice Roger B. Taney's. ALS signed “S. Nelson,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, October 9, 1869. Letter to Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, in part: "Permit me to introduce to you Mr. George Clark of Otsego County one of our most wealthy and respectable citizens, and who desires to have some conversation with you on a subject concerning which, I have advised him you are the proper person to give him that information."
