Description

'Silent Cal' to a Republican ally: "I have a great deal of fear about trying to make a speech"

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, September 26, 1932. Hand-corrected letter to Henry L. Stoddard, in part: "I have had a letter from Mr. Sanders and he is very solicitous that whatever you do about a New York meeting should be in cooperation with the National Committee in order to avoid any interference with dates, broadcasts, etc….I do not know whether the President is going to speak in New York. If he is it may not be expedient to try to have any meeting but his in Madison Square Garden [Coolidge hand-writes: and have yours at some other place]…I had a good deal of difficulty in writing the piece for the Saturday Evening Post because I am so out of touch. I did not think it was very good and from what you said I fear it was worse than I thought. I have a great deal of fear about trying to make a speech." In fine condition.
