American admiral (1801-1870) who was a flag officer of the Navy during the Civil War. War-dated ALS signed “D. G. Farragut, Rear Admiral,” two pages, 7.75 x 10, September 1, 1863. Letter written from "Hastings on the Hudson," in part: "The character and abilities of your son are fully appreciated by me, and I only regret that I was unable for so long a time to dispense with his services on board the Potomac, but it was absolutely necessary to have an officer of good capacity as the Executive Officer…he has now…been ordered to more active duty, as my secretary is not with me I am unable to tell you what vessel he is on board of—so many officers are absent on leave from the Gulf Squadron, that it is impossible at this time to grant more until others have been sent out to take their places." In very good to fine condition, with several small holes, not affecting any text.
