Description

ALS in French, signed “Sarah,” one page, 3.25 x 4.5, personal letterhead, no date [August 1889]. In full (translated): "Jacques [Damala] is dead. This very night. I beg of you come and help me with what ever there is to be done about the press. I kiss you." Matted and framed with an artistic portrait of Bernhardt to an overall size of 14.5 x 12. In fine condition. Damala died in Paris on August 18, 1889, following an overdose of morphine and cocaine. When Bernhardt was alerted of his demise, she is cited as saying-presumably out of mercy for his condition-'Well, so much the better.' She kept Damala as her legal name until she died in 1923.
