Description

Notable group lot of seven letters from legendary actress Bette Davis, signed either "B. D." or "Bette," consisting of six ALSs and one TLS, 12 total pages, ranging in size from 5 x 4 to 7.25 x 10.5, dated between 1953 and 1974. All letters are addressed to Dr. Vincent Carroll, with subject matter consisting mostly of Davis conveying her thanks for sent dresses and flowers. Highlights from the letters: "As you no doubt know this operation is the end. God knows when I'll ever be myself again. What a bruised face—and what an ache!"; "Do hope you will come east. Let me know ahead if you would like to see our play—It is a hit!"; "Thank you so very much for your thoughtfulness in writing me about Mother. I was very worried about her. Think the whole performance is so god damned silly, and what a time to do it—when she was really ill. A bit cowardly I would say." In overall fine condition. Also includes a handwritten note from her daughter, Barbara Sherry, and two handwritten letters from her husband, actor Gary Merrill.
