Description

Signer of the US Constitution from Pennsylvania (1749-1822) who also ran unsuccessfully as the Federalist vice-presidential candidate in the 1812 election. ALS signed “J. Ingersoll,” one page, 7.5 x 8, January 23, 1807. Letter to Philadelphia lawyer William Rawle, in part: "I think you are right in your opinion upon the Ordinance under one Law the assessment is unauthorized in the manner of appointing the assessors under the other I do not conceive, the language of the Laws do not include occupations, professions, etc…in fact, I believe under the Acts for raising County rates & levies, a personal Tax other than on single men has been collected. I return your opinion. In Carson's Case we have never prepared the Statements for the Judges, how shall we manage the business?" In very good to fine condition, with old repairs to the right edge and horizontal fold. Rawle served as the first U.S. District Attorney for Pennsylvania from 1791-1800; he was succeeded by Ingersoll, who served in the position for one year.
