British rear admiral (1729-1800) who served valiantly during the Seven Years War and, as Commander-in-Chief in the West Indies during the American War of Independence, helped capture St. Lucia in 1778. Revolutionary War-dated LS, one page, 8 x 12.75, July 13, 1778. Letter to "The Principal Officers and Commissioners of His Majesty's Navy," in full: "I am sorry to be under the necessity of complaining of the Buntin and Hammocks, with which His Majesty's Ship the Prince of Wales was supplied before she left England; but the former is so very bad that the Colours are seldom twice hoisted without being mended, and the latter are made of such wretched stuff that they are worn out in five or six scrubbings." In fine condition, with faint staining, and an old mounting strip along the edge of the blank adjoining leaf.
