United States Army general (1898-1975) who commanded the force defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, most famous for his brief reply to a German surrender ultimatum—'Nuts!' Three items: a vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 portrait of McAuliffe in uniform, signed and inscribed in white ink, "To Mr. Kenneth Browne, with best wishes, A. C. McAuliffe, Lt. Gen., U. S. Army"; a TLS signed "A. C. McAuliffe," one page, January 31, 1953, enclosing a signed photo; and a TLS signed "A. C. McAuliffe," one page, January 18, 1955, in part: "Stuttgart, where I live, is a modern and progressive industrial city where we have made a number of German friends. The Seventh Army has been a fine command, with an excellent staff, so I shall leave for my new assignment in Heidelberg with considerable regret.'" In overall very good to fine condition, with corner creasing to the photo, and rusty paperclip impression to all three items.
