Description

"I thought you might take the job as President of the Club"

TLS, two pages, 8.25 x 10.75, St. Louis National Baseball Club letterhead, January 18, 1936. Lengthy letter to former Cardinals pitcher Eddie Dyer, in part: "You and I have talked over from time to time in the past this thing of promotion, and last spring, without any particular planning, you found yourself suddenly as manager of the Rochester club. That was undoubtedly a step in the right direction, and as I look back on it, I think you would still be the manager of the Rochester club if I had been able to have spent a day or two in Rochester, at the time. However that may be, the point now is, and the point has been for sometime past, that your work in baseball must have some sort of different identification, first, in order to maintain your present salary, and second, certainly so in order to place you in position at some time or other to increase your present income…It was with all this in mind that I wrote you suggesting a combination job, something that would justify your present salary and perhaps lead into new fields that might sooner or later mean a better opportunity for you. And when I wrote you I had in mind Columbus (Georgia) in the newly organized South Atlantic League. It has been pointed out to me that these is some sort of a tentative arrangement for a Mr. Reeves to become the President of the Columbus (Georgia) Club, Mr. Reeves owns the park, and is the most prominent figure in all his part of the country…I thought you might take the job as President of the Club…If I can without offense have Mr. Reeves consent to accept the Vice Presidency of the club, and represent the Columbus club in our affairs as Director of the South Atlantic League, subject to your orders, I think that would be the correct thing to do." Rickey makes a few handwritten corrections to the text and signs his initials to a postscript: "I have written to Reeves. Expect an answer right away. BR." In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and Beckett Authentication.
