Italian opera composer and conductor (1774-1851), extremely celebrated in his time, though largely forgotten after his death. AMS in Italian, one page, 7.25 x 9, July 24, 1847. Spontini pens a sonnet dedicated to contralto Elena Angri, beginning: "O Angri eccelsa!!… Bella e suonora voce, / Dall'alto al piu profondo, / Tuono vibrante e tondo, / Angri venendo al mondo, / Il cielo a te dono!" Boldly signed at the conclusion, "In souvenire puro e sincero, di Spontini." In fine condition, with repairs to the splits at the ends of the central horizontal fold. In John Weeks Moore's Complete Encyclopedia of Music, he writes of Angri: 'She has always been an especial favorite of Rossini, Meyerbeer, and Spontini, the latter of whom wrote an Italian sonnet in praise of her full and sonorous voice—one also of extraordinary compass.'
