Description

TLS signed “Ridgway,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, Headquarters, Eighth United States Army (EUSAK) letterhead, January 17, 1951. Letter to Lt. Gen. Leslie R. Groves, who had famously overseen the Manhattan Project during World War II. In full: "It was fine of you to write so promptly. You know, I am sure, my own deep and warm feeling of friendship with you combined with a great admiration. I hope some good turn of fortune brings us together again. Meanwhile my warmest best wishes and grateful appreciation for your message." In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner.

General Ridgway took command of the Eighth United States Army in Korea in December 1950, and was given wide discretion by Douglas MacArthur, commander of all United Nations forces in Korea. Ridgway quickly raised morale, reorganized the command structure with fresh and aggressive leaders, and made effective use of artillery against the superior numbers of Chinese and North Korean troops. A few days before Ridgway wrote this letter, the Chinese People's Volunteer Army captured Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Under Ridgway's leadership, the Eight Army slowed and halted the Chinese offensive. He then launched in rapid succession Operation Thunderbolt, Operation Killer, and Operation Ripper, counter-offensives to destroy as much of the Chinese army as possible. The last operation led to the recapture of Seoul by United Nations forces in mid-March 1951.
