Description

Scottish geologist (1792-1871) who was the first to investigate the Silurian system. ALS signed “Rod. I. Murchison,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, December 29, 1865. In part: "When I endeavoured to explain to you the grounds on which…I deemed it right & proper, that when a man of science is created a Baronet some allusion should be made to the position he occupies, I did not sufficiently acquaint you with the nature of my connection to the Royal Geographical Society. I therefore now enclose a copy of the charter by which you will see that my name only appears on it. As to the other place I might have made it more significant of the claim I preferred, if I had informed you that I am not only Director of the Geographical Survey, but also of 'The Royal School of Mines,' with its seven eminent Professors." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, a small chip to the top edge, and partial splitting to the hinge.
