Description

Georgia-born American writer (1925-1964), best known for her quintessentially 'Southern Gothic' stories and novels, who died of lupus at the age of 39. DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, July 21, 1958. A letter sent to O'Connor by the publisher Doubleday & Company (erroneously addressed to "Mr. O'Connor"), requesting permission to reprint one of her stories in an anthology. In part: "Sometime during January 1959 we plan to publish the volume Prize Stories 1959: The O. Henry Awards, selected by Paul Engle. This letter is to ask permission to reprint your story A View of the Woods which appeared in the fall 1957 issue of the Partisan Review…In addition to the prizes which will be paid to the winners, fifty per cent of the editor's earnings from the book will be divided equally among the contributors." O'Connor consents to the request, signing at the conclusion in ballpoint and adding the date of July 24, 1958. In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner. 'A View of the Woods,' one of O'Connor's many works with a religious theme, was later published in her iconic short story collection Everything That Rises Must Converge.
