French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon and his armies (1815-1891). ALS in French, signed “E. Meissonier,” one page both sides, 4 x 5.25, personal letterhead, November 27, 1876. Letter to a gentleman, in part (translated): "I certainly have not forgotten the memory of military comradeship that you will recall…I know, it is true, of the superior commission; but I fear that his role is almost finished. Krantz alone is the master and I think it's good. I know him very little personally, having seen him only two or three times at the said commission; it seems to me, however, that he does not look upon me as the first comer. I will go and see him and make all my efforts; if I do not get anything it will not be, believe the good, for want of having badly asked." In fine condition. Accompanied by an albumen portrait of Meissonier and a small print of his painting entitled '1814.'
