Nicknamed 'Light-Horse Harry,' Lee (1756-1818) was a Revolutionary War hero who captured British posts in New York and in the South; he later served as governor of Virginia and as a US congressman, and was the father of Robert E. Lee. ALS, one page, 7.5 x 9.5, September 15, 1788. Letter to John Chaloner in Philadelphia, in part: "I wrote to you the other day enclosing a memorandum of some articles which I wished to have done in Philad'a—I have never heard from you…It is necessary for me soon to know that I may hold you…equal to the demand." Matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 20 x 14.5. In fine condition, with a small seal-related hole affecting one word of the text.
