Italian opera composer (1867-1948) in the verismo, or 'realist,' style, known for his opera Andrea Chénier. Untranslated ALS in Italian, signed “M. Giordano,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 6 x 8.25, Villa Fedora letterhead, May 31, 1923. Letter to the mother of Gian Carlo Menotti, regarding the advancement in Menotti's musical studies at the age of 12. In fine condition. The Umberto Giordano Festival was started on the occasion of the centenary of the first performance of the composer’s 1898 opera Fedora, and the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death in 1948. It originated as an event devoted to musicians and composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, but was later extended to include all the musical genres of the last century. It is held every July in Baveno, where the composer spent lengthy periods on holiday and at work in his superb Villa Fedora.
