The sixth vice president of the United States under James Madison, who also served as the fourth governor of New York (1774-1825). Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.75 x 9, March 12, 1810. As governor of New York, Tompkins appoints Elisa L. Conklin as "Ensign of a Company in the Regiment of Militia in the County of Steuben, whereof Samuel S. Haight, Esquire, is a Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant." Prominently signed at the conclusion by Governor Tompkins and countersigned by Daniel Hale as secretary. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light stains, toning to the folds and edges, and paper loss to the lower right corner area.
