ALS as president, signed “C. A. Arthur,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 6.75, October 9, 1881. Letter to Daniel G. Rollins in New York, marked "Private," in full: "I want to see you in regard to several matters. Can you come over here on Tuesday or Wednesday night at the latest? If you will do so, you will much oblige me and I will detain you but a few hours. Please answer as soon as you receive this." In fine condition, with some old mounting remnants on the back of the last page. Rollins was a lawyer and politician who served as New York's district attorney in 1881, and the two were together at Arthur's home when he learned of President Garfield's death on September 19th. A significant letter from the nascent stage of Arthur's term in the White House.
