Description

American aerospace engineer and an aviation/space pioneer (1913-2000) who was the first director of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center, which was later renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Two items: a TLS signed "Robert R. Gilruth," one page, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, July 10, 1961, addressed to Ken Browne, in part: "The manned flight of the Freedom 7 Mercury Spacecraft was a most significant milestone in our national space research program. It was, as I am sure you know, the result of months and months of intensive work by thousands of talented and dedicated people. We are all tremendously proud to have had a part in such a historic event. At the same time, we hope that everyone in the world realizes that the Freedom 7 flight, made by Astronaut Alan Shepard, is but a single step in our long-term program of manned space exploration. We are looking forward to a continuation of that program to more ambitious undertakings. Again, my thanks for your message I am enclosing an autographed photograph which you requested"; and an official glossy 8 x 10 black-numbered NASA photo of Gilruth, signed in black ink, "Robert R. Gilruth." In overall very good condition, with surface impressions, a paperclip impression, and overall creasing to the photo.
