Description

American statesman (1762-1816) who served as Washington's personal secretary and later assumed posts in the Jefferson and Madison administrations. LS, one page, 7.5 x 9.25, February 20, 1815. Letter to "The Pay Master of the Army," concerning a payment for the apprehension of deserters as the War of 1812 drew to a close. In part: "Be pleased to cause stoppage to be made from the Pay of the men named at foot in the sum of Fifty Dollars each, being amount for their apprehension as Deserters, by Lieut: Jonathan Kearsley…in July 1814." In very good condition, with tape on the reverse repairing fold splits and an area of paper loss to the left edge.
