Colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War (1740-1823) who was one of the settlers of the Northwest Territory in what is now the state of Ohio. He later served the federal government as an Indian agent working with the Cherokee in southeastern Tennessee. Revolutionary War-dated manuscript DS, signed “R. J. Meigs, Col.,” one page, 8 x 3.25, December 25, 1780. In full: "These may certifiy that Serg't George Doolittle Served in the 6th. Conn't Reg't in the Continental Army before the first day of Jany last." Signed at the conclusion by Meigs. Includes a partly printed DS, one page, 7 x 7, March 12, 1781, signed by Doolittle who affirms that he received a payment from the Pay-Table-Committee. In overall fine condition.
