Lawyer, politician, and diplomat from New York (1746-1813) known as 'The Chancellor,' who was one of the five original drafters of the Declaration of Independence. He later served as US minister to France, negotiating the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. ALS signed “Rob't R. Livingston,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, March 18, 1804. Letter to the "Minister for External Relations," in part: "I have the honor to transmit you the proclamation of Gov'r Claiborne, by which you will see that the United States were in the quiet possession of New Orleans on 20th Oct'r." In fine condition, with two small mounting remnants to each horizontal edge.
The Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed on April 30, 1803, by Robert R. Livingston, James Monroe, and Francois Barbe-Marbois at the Hotel Tubeuf in Paris. William C. C. Claiborne supervised the transfer of the territory to US control, and served as governor of the Territory of Orleans from December 20, 1803 to April 30, 1812. A superb and historic piece of correspondence about the earliest days of one of America's most colorful modern cities.
