Description

Uncommon pairing of publications related to the premiere of the 1940 Western film Arizona, which starred Jean Arthur, William Holden, and Warren William, and was directed by Wesley Ruggles. The first is an original program for the film's world premiere in Tucson, Arizona on November 15-16, 1940, 20 pages, 9 x 12, which features a cast list, a story outline, and various scenes from the film. The second item is a hardcover souvenir booklet with front cover showing imagery from the film's poster and reading: "The Winning of a Mighty Empire Inspired The Making of a Great Picture." The 36-page booklet measures 14 x 12 and features an assortment of behind-the-scenes images, with sections dedicated to Ruggles, the main cast and writers, a section of the screenplay, and background information on the construction of Old Tucson, the city built by Columbia Pictures for the film. In overall very good to fine condition, with notable wear and creasing to covers of both booklets. After reading Clarence Budington Kelland's novel of the same name, Ruggles convinced Columbia Studios to green-light Arizona for filming in a location some 10 miles south of downtown Tucson in the Sonoran Desert. When filming was completed, the site lay dormant for a few years during World War II before coming under new management and continuing on as Old Tucson Studios, the premiere filming destination for a myriad of popular Western movies and television programs.
